Japan s economy is set to grow much slower than previously hoped this quarter, hobbled by extended emergency measures put in place to halt a rise in coronavirus infections, a Reuters poll showed.
It is likely to expand an annualised 1.7% this quarter, less than half the 4.7% projected last month, according to the poll of 33 economists conducted May 6-13.
Nearly all of the economists polled believe the government will compile an extra budget to support the world s third-largest economy, with 60% expecting it to come before the end of the third quarter. ....

Student arrested after gun incident

A Somerset Island Prep student was arrested Wednesday after posting a photo involving a gun on the social media platform Snapchat, resulting in numerous area schools being placed on lockdown.
The student, who was not identified by Key West Police, faces charges of possessing a weapon on school property as well as disruption of multiple educational institutions in the city.
He was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice, according to Key West Police spokeswoman Alyson Crean, who added that the investigation is ongoing.
Crean said police were notified Wednesday morning of a juvenile allegedly possessing a black firearm, and that he had the gun in his waist band when he boarded a school bus on Cudjoe Key. He arrived at Key West High School and reportedly walked off the campus, Crean said, as Somerset Island Prep is roughly a block away from Key West High. ....

South Africa s rand firmed in early trade on Friday as global risk demand was aided by signs the United States central bank would keep lending rates low despite rising inflation.
A Federal Reserve official this week said the surprise jump in consumer inflation had not dented the bank s plans to keep its support for the economy.
At 0700 GMT the rand was 0.35% firmer at 14.0875 per dollar, compared to an overnight close of 14.1375. ....
