The 121-day constitutional session limit is less than two weeks away, and there is no end in sight. The House kicked the operating budget back to the rules committee on Sunday after it became clear they did not have the 21 votes to pass a budget. Tension between the mostly Democratic House Majority and Republican Minority came to a boiling point on Sunday when minority members complained that all of their amendments were being not heard. One of those members, Representative Steve Thompson (R – Fairbanks), stated that he had intended to vote yes, but changed his mind because of the process. But Thompson was the one who motioned to adjourn on Saturday night, meaning the budget would go into third reading the next day. Zach Freeman awarded state contract while still employed by legislature
Zach Freeman, who worked as the House Republican Minority press secretary from December 31, 2018 to January 18, 2021, won a communications contract from the Department of Administration while he was still employed by the Alaska Legislature. His employment dates with the legislature were provided by the Legislative Affairs Agency.
According to documents obtained by the Landmine through a records request, Freeman’s company, Imperial Independent Media, was awarded the contract on January 4, 2021, 14 days before his employment with the legislature ended. The RFP for the contract was issued on December 15, 2020. Bids were due six days later on December 21, 2020. Three firms bid on the RFP. The contract was approved by Commissioner Kelly Tshibaka. ....
