Frustrated by the lack of drugs available to carry out lethal injections in their state, South Carolina lawmakers are on the cusp of a controversial solution: forcing death row inmates to face the electric chair or firing squad when lethal injection is not possible.
A bill proposing that change, approved by the State House this week, appears almost certain to become law in the next few days, and is being lauded by Republicans, including Gov. Henry McMaster, who have been vexed by pharmaceutical companies’ refusal to sell states the drugs needed to carry out lethal injections. COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - South Carolina is one of three states without a hate crime law on the books, but that could soon change.
For more than two hours Tuesday, community members interested in voicing their opinions on a bill that would increase the penalty on crimes motivated by hate against a certain group spoke in front of a House subcommittee.
The push for a hate crimes bill comes after House Speaker Jay Lucas, R-Darlington, formed a committee after a summer of protests took place across South Carolina in the wake of the death of George Floyd. A group of business leaders from around the state also came together to ask for the passage of this bill last month. ....

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - While the debate over the ‘Fetal Heartbeat Bill’ took place on the inside of the statehouse, and a protest took place on the outside.
Roughly 40 protestors, organized in part by Women’s Rights and Empowerment Network (WREN), the ACLU and Planned Parenthood, brought signs, chanted, and called for the lawmakers to reject the bill.
