Grassroots political activists push back against automatically adding legislators to party executive committees

Most grassroots political activists who spoke at a public hearing this morning said they’re against a bill that would automatically make legislators members of party executive committees.

“This is nothing but a blatant power grab,” said Selina Vickers, who was a Democratic candidate for House of Delegates last year.  “It would drown out the voices and more importantly the votes of other committee members, and I suspect that’s the point.”
Vickers added, “This is legislators attempting to stack the deck solidly in their favor, and it’s despicable.” ....

House unanimously passes bill addressing convictions from discredited forensic evidence


CHARLESTON The House of Delegates has passed a bill that would give wrongfully convicted people a pathway to get back into state court based on discredited forensic evidence.
House Bill 2888, which is sponsored by Delegate Joshua Higginbotham (R-Putnam), now heads to the state Senate. It was passed March 16 by the House on a 99-0 vote after unanimously passing the House Judiciary Committee earlier this month.
“With scientific advancements made every day, it’s critical that our justice system keep up,” Higginbotham said. “When bad or outdated science convicts an innocent person, that means the true perpetrator is still out in the community. ....

CHARLESTON The comments of a member of the House of Delegates on social media against possible non-discrimination legislation for the LGBTQ community have raised new calls for him to resign and the need for civil rights protections.
LGBTQ civil rights group Fairness West Virginia brought together Democratic lawmakers and advocates Tuesday in a virtual press conference to address remarks by Delegate John Mandt Jr., R-Cabell.
“This is now the second time I’ve had to address this particular delegate for the words and hate that he has spewed on his social media,” said Delegate Cody Thompson, D-Randolph, the only openly gay man in the House. “I see those words as pure hate, and I’m personally sick of it. I’m absolutely sick of working with people who do not value me as a person.” ....
