Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed House Bill 286 into law on Friday to prevent law enforcement from being defunded in the state.
In a symbolic gesture, the bill was signed just outside the city of Athens, which has proposed slashing local police budgets. State Representative Houston Gaines, a Republican who represents Athens, sponsored the bill.
Gaines spoke about the new law following the signing ceremony that said, in part:
Here in Georgia, we back the blue. And that’s why we’re here today – to say loud and clear that we support law enforcement, and that we’re going to keep families in our state safe.

Dear Friends, Our Georgia law enforcement officers deserve our utmost respect. They and our other first responders put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities. This year the General Assembly showed support for them in two ways through our own budget priorities and legislation protecting law enforcement budgets at the local level. In the budget this year, over $250,000 was included for the GBI’s Gang Task Force, providing legal assistance to local jurisdictions to prosecute gang members.

ATLANTA – Speaker of the House David Ralston (R – 7) commented on the General Assembly’s accomplishments for the 2021 session.
Starting off with the hottest issue of 2021, Ralston stated that he was “very pleased” with the Election Integrity Committee’s work. Chaired by Barry Fleming, they reviewed numerous bills submitted by Republicans and Democrats until the final version of SB 202 was passed. It added two optional Sunday voting days into Georgia law and added another mandatory Saturday.
“I expect many rural Georgia counties won’t vote on Sundays,” Ralston commented, adding that rural Georgians go to church and eat with families on the Sabbath. Also, some smaller counties might have issues staffing polling places on Sunday.
