Plans for Portland 18-story apartment building, Maine's tallest, get green light

Construction of what could be Maine’s tallest building and the state’s first high-rise in over a decade received approval Tuesday night from the Portland Planning Board.
The board unanimously OK’d site plans to construct an 18-story apartment building in downtown Portland, a $50 million project that would bring 263 units of much-needed housing to the city.
Landry/French Construction, based in Scarborough, will serve as construction manager. Work is expected to begin by September on the site, at 200 Federal St., and to be complete in late 2023.
Plans for the building required a zoning change earlier this year to allow the top 40 feet of the 190-foot structure to be used for residences and other purposes. Previously, the city’s code allowed a building of that height, but only with an “architectural cap” containing mechanical equipment or to enhance design. ....

Unanimous council vote makes way for high rise in downtown Portland
The 18-story, 190-foot building at Temple and Federal streets, which still faces review by the historic preservation and planning boards, would surpass Franklin Towers by 15 feet to become the state s tallest building.

Proposed 18-story tower could ease Portland's housing crunch, alter skyline

If it becomes Maine’s tallest building as expected, an 18-story apartment tower to be built in downtown Portland would claim a title that hasn’t changed hands in over half a century.
Or, depending on the measuring stick, the “tallest” distinction could remain with a structure in Lewiston that’s held it since 1890.
One thing is clear: Redfern Properties’ proposed 190-foot building at 200 Federal St., Portland, would be the first new high-rise to rise anywhere in Maine for over a decade.
Landry/French Construction, based in Scarborough, has agreed to serve as construction manager, the firm s CEO, Kevin French, and Redfern principal Jonathan Culley told Mainebiz. Landry/French is currently screening subcontractors and expects to have them signed on over the next 30 to 60 days. ....
