Officials in Simcoe County have confirmed three additional cases of the UK B.1.1.7 coronavirus variant, with more than 100 other suspected cases, as a tragic outbreak at a Barrie long-term care home where it was first detected continues to claim lives.
Simcoe-Muskoka District Health Unit Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Colin Lee said that three more variant cases were confirmed, bringing the total in the region to 10.
The variant was originally suspected at Roberta Place long-term care home in early January, after a worker who had close contact with someone who travelled abroad became sick. ....

A devastating outbreak linked to the British variant of COVID-19 at a long-term care home north of Toronto has now infected just more than 300 individuals, heightening fears of community spread.
Ninety “household members” – a broad group that includes family of people who live or work at Roberta Place in Barrie, Ont., as well as staff from local hospitals, paramedic services and other community agencies helping manage the outbreak –
have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, said Charles Gardner, Medical Officer of Health at the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, in an interview on Wednesday.
All but one of the home’s 128 residents have been sickened with the virus, along with 86 staff members. ....

Health officials investigate outbreak at Ontario long-term care home to detect possible U.K. COVID-19 variant

Public health officials continue to investigate whether a COVID-19 outbreak at a Bradford West Gwillimbury long-term care home is connected to a variant of the virus detected in the United Kingdom.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit confirmed on Sunday that an individual who tested positive for the U.K. variant had close contact with someone connected to the outbreak at Bradford Valley Care Community.
According to the health unit, six of 230 residents and three of 260 staff members have tested positive for the virus.
“It is worrisome,” said Sandy Kerr, who’s 84-year-old mother Barbara Dawson is one of the six residents who tested positive for COVID-19. ....
