Simcoe Muskoka marks its deadliest week since start of pandemic

BARRIE, ONT.
It s been one year since the World Health Organization first warned about the threat of a new virus. At that time, 41 people had been diagnosed with COVID-19.
One year later, Simcoe Muskoka logs its deadliest week associated with the virus since the pandemic started.
On Friday, the health unit reported that another four infected people passed away, bringing the region s death toll to 86. Fifteen people have passed away with the virus since Monday.
A deadly outbreak at Roberta Place in Barrie claimed the lives of six residents, and the facility reports more than 70 residents and staff members have been diagnosed. ....

'The pandemic is growing in Simcoe Muskoka,' Health unit reports 49 new COVID-19 cases

BARRIE, ONT.
Simcoe Muskoka added 49 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, for a total of 232 so far this week.
The region also had another virus-related death reported by Georgian Bay General Hospital. The Midland facility is battling an outbreak of the virus that has infected 26 staff members and 23 patients.
Simcoe Muskoka s health unit lists 614 active cases across the region, including 22 hospitalizations.
The health unit says about half of all positive cases in December were close contacts with an infected person, while about 20 per cent were community-acquired with no known source.
The region s top doc, Dr. Charles Gardner, has said contact tracing has been challenging as more people venture out of the home. ....

188 new COVID-19 cases reported over the weekend in Simcoe Muskoka

BARRIE, ONT.
There was a spike in COVID-19 cases across Simcoe Muskoka over the weekend, with the health unit reporting 188 new infections, plus one new death.
The region s virus-related death toll climbed to 60 Monday after a Simcoe County man, 45 to 64, died over the weekend.
Georgian Bay General Hospital also reported a virus-related death, not yet listed by the health unit. The death comes as the Midland hospital continues to grapple to contain a COVID-19 outbreak. Some of the affected staff have now completed two weeks of isolation and returned to work.
Along with the hospital, there are outbreaks at five seniors homes. The recent outbreaks at Waterford Retirement Community in Barrie and the Bradford Valley Care Community have since ended. ....

COVID-19 outbreaks declared at multiple seniors's homes, Midland hospital

BARRIE, ONT.
The health unit declared a COVID-19 outbreak at the Raglan Village retirement home in Collingwood after one resident tested positive for the virus.
The facility s executive director said the resident is asymptomatic and no other residents or staff are infected.
Provincial COVID-19 protocols require an outbreak to be declared with a single case of the virus within a long-term care or retirement home.
There are currently five other seniors homes across Simcoe County with COVID-19 outbreaks, including Waterford Retirement Community, Mill Creek Care Centre, Coleman Care Centre, all in Barrie, Kingsmere Retirement Living in Alliston, and Bradford Valley Care Community in Bradford West Gwillimbury. ....
