The Chicago Blackhawks went into the 2021 season without a legitimate starting goaltender at the NHL level. They came out of the 2021 season … basically in the same position. Kevin Lankinen emerged as a solid NHL-caliber goaltender in his rookie season, but he wasn’t able to keep his hot start to the season going all year long. Malcolm Subban and Collin Delia performed at the level you would have expected out of them, but neither fully took the reins as a long-term solution (as a starter or backup) for the organization. With all three goalies signed through the end of next season, it appears that the trio will again be called upon for one of them to fully take hold of the starter role next season. ....
The biggest storyline of the season for the Chicago Blackhawks was the emergence of their 2021 rookie class. Having iced a dozen rookies this season with many of them becoming regulars in the lineup towards the back-half of the year, the expectations and level of success for the team started low at the beginning of the year, got a little high at the mid-point of the season, and eventually came back down to earth by the trade deadline. It was a weird season, but the emergence of the young players with most of them showcasing their ability to hang at the NHL level was the highlight of the year. ....
• The speed in his game, man, you love to see that. • Hagel’s ninth of the season and an assist in last night’s game solidified himself as finishing the season fifth in points for the Blackhawks. • Hagel is one point behind Pius Suter in fourth-place on the team on scoring, which guarantees that the two rookies will finish the season in the top-five of team scoring. That’s the first time since the 2007-08 season where two rookies have finished in the top-five of team scoring. • The two rookies to finish in the top-five in 2007-08: Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. ....
With a win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night, their first of the season, the Nashville Predators have locked up the fourth and final spot in the Central Division playoff picture, eliminating the Dallas Stars with two games remaining in the season. The Stars come to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks today and tomorrow to close the season for both teams and will also serve as the first and only two games of the 2021 schedule with fans at the United Center. While it will be an awesome energy in the building, there will be very little for the teams on the ice to battle for. ....
The Chicago Blackhawks continue to move more young players into the fold as the season winds down to the final two games of 2021. On Sunday morning, the Blackhawks recalled rookie forward Evan Barratt to the Taxi Squad from the Rockford IceHogs. #Blackhawks prospect Evan Barratt could make his #NHL debut after he was recalled from the #AHL to the taxi squad. His 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 27 games rank third on the #IceHogs. Chicago (vs. DAL twice) and Rockford (vs. IA, at CHI) each play Sunday and Monday. After the Blackhawks announced that Brett Connolly and Duncan Keith, both of whom left the last game against the Hurricanes with concussions, were not cleared to play the final games of the season and that Calvin de Haan and Ryan Carpenter were also not cleared to play the final games of the year, the club moved Barratt up and could likely give him his first shot at the NHL in one of the final two games of the year. ....
