When winter holiday romance movies take over the cable airwaves, viewers can count on a few constants: Man and woman meet, usually in a charming small town that holds a Christmas festival. They then fall in love before hitting a rough patch only to go on to live happily ever after.
But the films that aired this past December didn t stick to the formula.
The storylines were basically the same, but the leads were much different. They weren t just white, but Black, Asian, and Hispanic. Men fell in love with men. One woman used a wheelchair. And, for the past couple of years, a couple of movies have celebrated Hanukkah, a Jewish observance. ....

TV's first crop of queer Christmas movies range from saccharine fun to superficial flops

In 2000, the Hallmark Channel aired its first original holiday-themed movie, The Christmas Secret, about a professor who sets out to prove that reindeer can fly, and later meets Santa. In the 20 years since, other networks, notably Lifetime, have gotten in on the game, turning end-of-year programming into a nonstop marathon of tinsel, kisses and Christmas dreams coming true.
But the genre hasn t always brought good cheer to viewers, many of whom noticed a distinct lack of marginalized groups. As Salon s Amanda Marcotte pointed out last December, running down this year s schedule of Christmas movie offerings is like a trip into an uncanny valley of shiny-teethed, blow-dried heteronormative whiteness, with only a few token movies with characters of color. It s like watching The Stepford Wives, but scarier, since the evil plot to replace normal people with robots is never actually revealed. ....

In olden times, the people behind the so-called gay agenda wanted nothing more than what everyone else already had: marriage, kids, suburban bliss, job security and equal access to all the benignly merry things in life. Some in the LGBTQ+ sphere fretted that this wish list, once granted, strips away some of the qualities that set us uniquely apart. What happens to the innovation, the rebelliousness, the tawdry fun that can only come from living on society’s fringe? Does getting all the basic things make us too … basic?
To look at queer life now in American culture, the question has all but answered itself: With the incremental attaining of equal rights, it’s as if the magic key was at last inserted into the glowing treasure chest, unleashing a superfluid starburst that enhanced the full spectrum of gender and sexuality – for everyone. In what was originally thought to be a victory for the vanilla, we gained a thousand ....
