Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports Julian Merryweather’s journey to the big leagues has been a long time coming. Pitching in just his second year in the MLB, the 29-year-old took a long, winding path to break camp with the Blue Jays on Opening Day. It’s easy to forget how the Blue Jays acquired him initially back in 2018 because it was a “nothing trade.” Some might recall he was involved in the infamous Josh Donaldson trade at the August 2018 non-waiver deadline. As the Bringer of Rain was rehabbing for a late-season return, the Blue Jays flipped him to Cleveland in exchange for a player to be named later. Great individual seasons by Cubs who had bad springs, since 2006 Share this story This article topic was suggested in the comments to my “great springs” article from Wednesday morning. Spring training numbers generally don’t mean too much, especially now when games are absolutely not played the way regular-season games are, regulars play maybe half the games, lineups are set so that regulars get the most at-bats, etc. So these are players who had terrible springs, then went on to have good regular season numbers. His OBP is lower than his BA because he had a sacrifice bunt AND a sacrifice fly. He did steal a base, which is one more steal than he had in his entire four-year Cubs playing career. ....
Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images Opening day is now 17 days away, and Dodgers relievers Brusdar Graterol and Joe Kelly have yet to face live hitters, putting their availability for April 1 in question. “I would assume that he’ll take down some live hitters at some point in time,” manager Dave Roberts said of Graterol Monday. “But until he checks that box, we won’t see him in a game.” In addition to getting married this offseason, Graterol was sidelined from throwing this offseason. Roberts would not specify what Graterol dealt with, though did say it was nothing orthopedic. “There’s a lot of things that took place this winter for Brusdar that didn’t allow for him to prepare like he normally would have, as far as throwing bullpens to prepare for spring training. The last thing we want to do is speed him up when he’s not ready,” Roberts said. “The main thing is that we just want him to be healthy and progress the right way.” ....
