Health Warning – Algal Bloom In Cust Main Drain At Skewbridge

Canterbury DHB’s Community and Public Health unit has
issued a health warning for the Cust Main Drain at
Skewbridge.
The warning follows a high cover of
potentially toxic algae (benthic cyanobacteria), as well as
detaching mats, being found in the Cust Main
Drain.
People should avoid the area and animals,
particularly dogs, should not be allowed near the water
until the health warning has been lifted.
People are
advised to treat every low-flowing river cautiously, check
for the presence of benthic cyanobacteria and avoid
contact.

“Keep the Emergency Department for emergencies only”
is the message from clinicians as we head into the ANZAC Day
long weekend.
Cantabrians should expect longer wait
times if they attend the ED at Waipapa today and over the
long weekend, due to higher demand always expected on
weekend days and some unplanned staff sick
leave.
Acting ED Clinical Director Dr Sarah Carr says
it would be incredibly helpful if people make use of
Christchurch’s three urgent care centres if they don’t
have serious emergency needs.

staff to focus on only those who really need emergency care ....

Twenty people have had cancers confirmed and many others
have had pre-cancerous lesions removed since the National
Bowel Screening Programme started in Canterbury.
Kits
started being delivered in volume in December last year, and
by the end of March 16,705 kits had been sent to people aged
60 – 74 who had recent birthdays. The programme had its
official launch this morning in the foyer of the new Waipapa
building.
The faecal immunochemical test (FIT) is easy
