No plans for a mass Covid-19 vaccination event in Christchurch

Plans are set for the second mass vaccine event there, September 10-12.
Thousands of Wellingtonians will be jabbed against Covid-19 at a mass vaccination event at Sky Stadium targeting people previously reluctant to get their shots.

Canterbury's Covid-19 response manager, Ralph La Salle, says the region is well served by a growing number of vaccine clinics and there are no plans for a mass event.
The Wellington vaccination “festival” will feature music, art, live entertainment, kai – as well as jabs – over three days in October.
La Salle said the number of vaccination clinics in Canterbury was increasing daily as more pharmacies and GPs came on board.

Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins says he expects all regions to stick to the same timeframe to roll out the Covid-19 vaccine so will be speaking to the Canterbury District Health Board (DHB) about its slow rollout.
Around most of the country, vaccinations will open up to the wider population from the end of July.
But on the weekend the Canterbury DHB Covid-19 response senior officer Ralph La Salle told Stuff that it expected to be still vaccinating group 3 until mid-September, and most vaccinations for people in group 4 in Canterbury would not start until mid-September.

It was already well behind on the plan for group 3 which includes the over 65s - RNZ revealed in May that injections for those people wouldn't be starting until July, two months behind the national plan.
Simon Templeton from Age Concern in Canterbury has been asking local health officials for some assurance about the rollout.
The latest figures show just over 100,000 people have been vaccinated in the region.
He met DHB leaders yesterday and was happy with what he heard about the plan for those over 65.

Government set to intervene to speed up vaccine roll-out in Canterbury

Vulnerable group 3 residents in the region are already facing delays, with only 2 per cent vaccinated.
CDHB Covid-19 response lead Ralph La Salle denied the board was behind in its Covid-19 programme.
“Canterbury DHB is not, and has no intention of delaying vaccinations to our community.”
Hipkins told National spokesman for Covid-19 response Chris Bishop in Parliament on Tuesday that Canterbury had received all the Covid-19 doses it had asked for.
“The Ministry of Health are providing to Canterbury the doses that they have asked for in order to fulfil the delivery plan that they have agreed with the Ministry of Health,” he said in an answer to Bishop’s question about perceived delays.
