A young Hukarere Girls’ College student’s portrayal of her nana’s battle with Alzheimers disease has earned her a national accolade.
Lenaine Merrylees-Clarke, who is in year 12, won the Editor’s Choice Award in this year’s Write Off Line: Not There but Somewhere Young NZ Writers Secondary School Annual Writing Competition for her prose Forget-Me-Not.
While she says she gave it her all, she did not think she would receive an accolade given she had never entered any sort of writing competition previously. But seeing her name on the competition’s website was a humbling experience. ....

There’s a state of local emergency in Canterbury where two days of heavy rain has caused widespread flooding with roads closed, bridges washed away, power cuts, homes evacuated and farmers losing land and livestock.
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu acting chief executive Darren Beatty says rūnanga staff are part of the team at the emergency operations centre in Christchurch.
The rūnanga has also been talking to its papatipu rūnanga and using its Facebook page to keep whānau informed of the help available in their areas. ....

A project by biology student Genevieve Early from the University of Canterbury’s Bio-Protection Research Centre has shown Armillaria novae-zealandiae, also known by Māori as harore, grows strongly on live or fresh pine wood.
Harore is common in native forests, where it is a natural part of the ecosystem, helping to decay fallen trees, but it’s known to be seriously destructive if it gets into pine plantations.
Ms Early says if it is approved for biological control of wilding pine, which are a major problem in many parts of the country, it may be of particular interest to iwi as a way of protecting landscapes and ecosystem values. ....
