Thousands of students in South San Diego County head back to school this week

Full-time in-person school is coming back Wednesday for South County families for the first time since the pandemic began.
On Wednesday Chula Vista Elementary and Sweetwater Union High will start the new school year. South County districts traditionally start the school year earlier than other local districts.
California’s waiver that allowed school districts to do distance learning has expired, so schools are required to provide full-time in-person instruction this new school year, although families can still choose independent or online learning.
Many South County students will be returning in-person this week. Although most South County districts reopened last spring at least part time for students, South County school districts were among the last to reopen last school year, partly due to previously high COVID rates in South County. ....

CHULA VISTA, CA State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond joined elementary students for class Thursday on two campuses in San Diego County which have stayed open for in-person learning by implementing safety measures and offering supports for students and families.
Thurmond visited Castle Park Elementary and Joseph Casillas Elementary, both located in Chula Vista, an area among the hardest hit by the pandemic.
The schools are two of the 49 schools in the Chula Vista Elementary School District, which serves nearly 30,000 students. The district s student body has 68% identified as Hispanic and 36% as English learners.
