Nashville Tennessean There s a spot along the northern edge of the Lake Trail at Radnor Lake State Park where Steve Ward likes to sit and look out. From the observation deck there, he can see the farthest peak that marks the end of the park, which is also a protected natural area. If you sit long enough, you may see a blue heron skimming the water for its next meal, an otter swimming by or goslings plodding along the shoreline. Ward, the park manager, said he hopes people will find a sense of reverence and wonder when they visit the Nashville park. Even though it s a busy park, he also hopes it s a peaceful place where people can enjoy nearly 1,400 acres of woods, trails and creeks surrounding the lake. ....
Wildflowers are in bloom across Ohio, but they are better left in the wild. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves (DNAP) would like to remind people not to pick the wildflowers this spring. âImagine if every person who visited a nature preserve picked just one wildflower,â DNAP Chief Jeff Johnson said. âWith thousands of people coming every year, there would be no wildflowers left for others to enjoy on our state lands.â Picking or digging plants from most public lands, including State Nature Preserves is illegal. These protections are necessary because removing a flower stops seed production for that year and can kill the plant. Removing even one flower can have lasting consequences. An example of this can be found in Ohioâs official state wildflower, the white trillium (Trillium grandiflorum). Its seeds take two years to germinate and another 5-7 years to bloom. Another unique spring ephemeral, th ....

Over the Garden Fence: Grateful for country roads Mary Lee Minor April is Ohio Native Plant Month. The first Ohio Native Plant Month was a year ago, but we know how that got clobbered. Actually, hundreds of plantings were completed during 2020 in an effort to support pollinators. Our Ohio Association of Garden Clubs Inc. and its affiliated clubs had no problem supporting this observance. Although we may not be crop producers we realize that, without pollinating wildlife, our state s agricultural production would be greatly reduced. A year ago, committed to this monthlong focus, our garden club was taking its turn hosting a regional garden club meeting. We looked to Pickwick Place to gather. Our theme became Grateful for Country Roads. ....
