Healey Sends Letter Inviting Hodgson to Speak With AG's Office

Sheriff Hodgson shot back in a press conference the next day, calling Healey’s report “baseless” and “politically motivated.” Hodgson also claimed that while compiling the evidence for its report, the AG’s Office never reached out to him for an interview, despite the fact that he said he was “the only one who got hurt” in the fracas between BCSO staff and a group of 10 immigrant detainees who refused to be taken to the jail’s medical wing for COVID-19 testing.
Hodgson says he was struck by a chair that a detainee is alleged to have thrown at him, causing a shoulder injury that the sheriff says has led to him still dealing with “nerve” issues, and chastised Healey’s report by saying she was “weaponizing” her office to combat those she disagrees with politically. ....

Hodgson: AG's Report 'Baseless' and 'Politically Motivated'

DARTMOUTH Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson attacked as “baseless” and “politically motivated” this week’s report from Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey that accused his officers of using excessive force and violating detainees’ civil rights during a May 1 melee at an immigration detention center in Dartmouth.
“The attorney general’s report goes to incredible lengths to dismiss and discount the truth about what really happened,” Hodgson said during a press conference Wednesday at the Bristol County House of Correction.
Hodgson said Healey’s investigators never interviewed him and left out evidence that he was struck by a chair that a detainee is alleged to have thrown at him during the fracas, which was sparked by detainees refusing to be taken to the jail’s medical wing to be tested for COVID-19. ....

AG Report: Bristol County Sheriff Violated Civil Rights Of Immigrant Detainees; Calls For Transfer Of Those In Custody

A new report issued Tuesday by Attorney General Maura Healey s office finds Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson violated the civil rights of federal immigration detainees during a violent altercation in May.
After a months-long investigation, the attorney general
determined Hodgson and his staff used excessive force in their response to a disturbance among some immigration detainees, employing a variety of weapons, including a flash bang grenade, pepper spray and pepper-balls, anti-riot shields and canines.
“Our investigation revealed that the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office violated the rights of detainees by using excessive force and by seriously risking their health and safety,” Healey said. “This callous disregard for the well-being of immigration detainees is unacceptable and must be addressed through the significant reforms we outline i ....
