A variance for an after-the-fact addition to a cabin on Lake Ida has been approved by the Douglas County Board of Adjustment. After first being denied by the board in June, it was now approved at the Board of Adjustment meeting Tuesday, July 27.
The applicants for the variance are Brenda Fischer and Scott Rieger, who are part of the Carolina Beach Co-op Association. ....

WDC adds online learning program for 2021-22 school year

Wadena-Deer Creek is planning a new distance learning program option for the 2021-22 school year that is similar to an online academy but students remain in the district.
The school board approved the Edmentum Online Learning Platform on April 19. Families who choose the distance learning option would be enrolled in this program. Students will have four core classes and two electives. The program provides state certified teachers for the classes. The district will also have a coordinator overseeing students.
The option of distance learning will likely be required again next school year, and some families have found they enjoy this style, as Superintendent Lee Westrum said. The hope is also that students who attend other online academies will join WDC’s online academy instead, and possibly interest homeschool families. ....

Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps, who was appointed to lead the city in late 2015, will stay in that role for at least another four years with a nearly $40,000 annual raise.
The Glendale City Council on Tuesday voted 6-1 in favor of a new four-year contract for Phelps, with a base salary of $270,000. The contract also includes a monthly vehicle allowance of $450. His base salary was nearly $230,000 previously. ....
