Houghton Council holds ethics discussion over Cole proposal | News, Sports, Jobs

HOUGHTON The Houghton City Council discussed an ethical issue Wednesday regarding a proposal Councilor Virginia Cole had selectively circulated to two other council members that prompted a call during public comment for Cole to resign.
The discussion centered on actions by Cole that came up during the Jan. 13 meeting, a week after the council learned of the Veridea Group’s withdrawal from negotiations for development of the big parking deck property on Lakeshore Drive. The Council voted to have the Planning Commission make recommendations on a course forward for development of the downtown and the big parking deck area. The vote was 6-1, with Cole casting the sole dissenting vote. ....

HOUGHTON Two rezoning requests for property along Houghton Canal Road met differing fates at Wednesday’s Houghton City Council meeting.
By a 4-3 vote, the council approved a rezoning request for JRG Development to rezone property along Houghton Canal Road from R-1 (single-family residential) to B-2 (community business). ....

Veridea development proposal
Veridea, who recently backed out of plans to redevelop Houghton’s parking decka nd waterfront area was proposing replacing the parking that currently exists between Huron Street and Isle Royale Street with a small park.

Houghton had been in talks with Veridea since 2019, when it responded to the city’s request for qualifications for developers along with two competing firms. HOUGHTON The Houghton City Council went back to the drawing board Wednesday night after the announcement that the Veridea Group was withdrawing its proposal for a $40 million development on the big parking deck area along Lakeshore Drive.
In a letter to the city, Veridea CEO Bob Mahaney said based on the December 16 council meeting, the city “has no defined process in place that can move the project forward at this time.” At that meeting, the council retracted a motion to move forward in defining the property and obtaining an appraisal after objections from some council members that the city needed to explore more options and seek more input from the public. ....

Houghton schools say goodby to board member Crystal Verran | News, Sports, Jobs

The Houghton-Portage Township Schools Board reconfirmed their COVID-19 delivery method, accepted the audit report, welcomed Troop 207 and said farewell to Crystal Verran at last week’s regular school board meeting.
The Boy Scouts of Troop 207 tuned in to the meeting as part of earning their ‘Citizenship in the Community’ merit badge.
“Part of the requirements are to attend some sort of public meeting,” explained Amanda Massaway, vice president of the school board. “So we’re happy to have all the scouts with us today, including my two.”
The board also said their farewells to board member and secretary Crystal Verran. ....
