Washington Capitals Prospects: Season in Review, Part 1 Share this story Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports This was a tough year for prospect evaluation, as COVID had a major impact on development leagues everywhere. Some were canceled, like the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), some had quirky schedules like the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), and many had shortened seasons with no playoffs like the American Hockey League (AHL). At the time of this writing just about every league is wrapped up except the East Coach Hockey League (ECHL); the Capitals don’t have any prospects playing for them, though they do have one they should sign (and more on that later). ....
“T.J. is: ‘Whatever you ask, whatever it takes,’” Laviolette said. “There is never a ‘Yeah, but’ or ‘I can’t’ or ‘Are you sure?’ It’s always: ‘Yep, no problem.’ It’s not his position. It’s not probably where he feels the most comfortable. But he’s able to adjust and adapt.” Oshie first shifted to center for the Capitals on Jan. 28, filling in because Evgeny Kuznetsov, Brian Pinho and Lars Eller were all unavailable. He said “it’s definitely been a while” since he last played the position, but Oshie understands the responsibilities attached. That’s because he’s a self-described “student of the game,” not only knowing his own assignments but tracking the assignments of his teammates, too. ....
Feb 16, 2021 | By: Chris Toman The Capitals have lost four straight games and all three versus the Penguins this season. But their high-scoring offense can get them back on track at any time. Photo By - USA TODAY Sports The Capitals have lost four straight games and all three versus the Penguins this season. But their high-scoring offense can get them back on track at any time. Photo By - USA TODAY Sports It s a five-game slate on the NHL betting board Tuesday night, including a tilt between the rival Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. These teams meet for the fourth time this season and second time in three days, and it s been a one-sided affair so far, with the Penguins going a perfect 3-0 in the head-to-head showing. ....
Capitals have overcome possible setbacks during strong start Follow Us Question of the Day By Andy Kostka - The Washington Times - Wednesday, February 3, 2021 In a two-week span, everything hit the Capitals at once. First, four games into the season, four key starters were added to the NHL’s coronavirus protocol list. Then came the flurry of day-to-day injuries that add up nonetheless, pitting Washington in an uncomfortable position from the off. “It seems like we’re kind of dropping like flies here,” T.J. Oshie said with a laugh, a winger who’s playing center out of necessity. But 10 games into a campaign with a new head coach and limited practice time beforehand, the Capitals have managed to ride that storm of possible setbacks to a 6-1-3 record. They’ll get back on the ice Thursday against the New York Rangers with a chance to continue a fast s ....
Some Caps notes: As has become a recurring theme, the Caps are again outperforming their shot-attempt metrics at five on five. The last few games, though, have taken that to a new extreme: Capitals net shot attempts and goals per game at 5v5 Will this continue? It’s hard to tell. The Caps have been without some of their top players in this stretch, and Evgeny Kuznetsov got off to a (surprisingly) good start this year possession-wise. However, anytime you’re 28th in the NHL in shot attempt percentage and 25th in expected goals percentage, that might be a problem. Further, some of the very players that have fueled the Caps overperformance (such as Kuznetsov and Ovechkin) have been out during this stretch. We will have to wait and see. ....
