Rookie's Root Beer Founder Brings Dino 'Happy Hours' to the Elderly

Jenny Rooke and friends at Elderwood
Jenny and Dave Rooke have operated Rookie s Root Beer from their home in Burlington s New North End since 2005. They sell soda almost exclusively on draft at restaurants and at the Burlington Farmers Market. After the pandemic torpedoed sales, the Rookes didn t have the capacity to revamp their distribution model to sell cans to stores or ship to customers.
Shortly after our world shut down, as Jenny put it, she received a gift from a girlfriend. It came with a note: Sorry you just lost your business, but here s an inflatable dinosaur costume. I hope it brings some joy to your life. With little else to do, Jenny put on the costume and started walking up and down North Avenue carrying a sparkly sign that said, Be kind. Stay safe. ....

Valley News - Quarantine an acute challenge for most vulnerable Vermont residents

Quarantine an acute challenge for most vulnerable Vermont residents
Modified: 1/11/2021 9:00:06 PM
Natalie Sinkew has worked her way through more word searches than she can count in her weeks of bedridden isolation at Queen City Nursing & Rehabilitation in Burlington.
Meanwhile she clings to a singular hope: To return home to her St. Albans apartment, so she can see her companion dog, a 15-pound poodle-terrier mix named Mi-mi, and resume her job at Goodwill.
But as the pandemic stretches on and she remains locked down in her room, that future only grows more distant. Sinkew’s health has deteriorated rather than improved, according to her friend and advocate David Przepioski. ....

Eddie Toney
Eddie Toney s first job was at a shoe factory in Littleton, N.H., just over the border from his hometown of St. Johnsbury. It was well into the Great Depression, and Eddie had quit school after eighth grade to help his family; he d never much enjoyed classroom learning anyway.
The teenager made $8.75 weekly, until one week when his pay envelope contained just 42 cents. As Eddie told the story, he returned it to his boss, saying, You can use it more than me and was summarily fired.
Other than a stint in the army during World War II, Eddie, who died in September of natural causes just four months shy of his 100th birthday, never worked for anyone else again. ....

Backstory: Best Reason to Go the Extra Mile

We d expected to hear canned statements defending the home s decisions, or nonanswers given under the guise of privacy concerns for residents and staff. That s what spokespeople often do when asked critical questions.
DiMario took a different approach. She not only answered questions about the decisions the home had made and the staff s efforts but also connected us with nurses and managers to interview. We came to appreciate just how long and hard the staff had been working in an environment that had become dangerous and emotionally draining. Many had also scrambled to find temporary shelter and childcare so they wouldn t infect their families. The details we d been hearing weren t so ugly because Birchwood had given up. They were ugly because the home was a war zone. ....

A New Wave of Outbreaks in Eldercare Homes Is Worse Than the First

Joan Bruns
Jean Baker and her mother, Joan Bruns, lived just 10 miles from one another, but they endured the pandemic apart. Baker s weekly visits to see Bruns at Elderwood at Burlington, the nursing home in the city s New North End, ended abruptly in March when such homes began indefinite lockdowns.
During phone calls, Baker could hear the isolation wearing on her 87-year-old parent. Physically ailing but mentally very sharp, Bruns became increasingly lonely. Some days she refused to get out of bed, Baker said.
Mother and daughter finally saw each other in August, when Bruns was briefly hospitalized. At the time, more frequent visits seemed on the horizon, as new COVID-19 cases remained low in Vermont. It was, instead, their last. ....
