Several members of Philadelphia City Council want to see more funding for anti-violence programs in the next fiscal year and beyond, as the city says gun violence has become the leading cause of death among young Black and Latino men.
Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration is proposing an additional $70 million for anti-violence efforts over the next five years. The money would be used to expand a pair of violence prevention programs, bolster the city’s blight remediation efforts, and launch a transitional jobs program, among other priorities. ....

Fighting Philly violence: Kenney's budget proposes $19M boost

Amid a historic surge in shootings and homicides, Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration is proposing an additional $18.7 million for anti-violence efforts during the next fiscal year. The funding would be used to expand a pair of violence intervention programs, a transitional jobs initiative, as well as the city’s blight remediation efforts, among other priorities.
If approved by City Council, the total investment into anti-violence programming during FY22 would be $35.5 million out of a $5.18 billion proposed spending plan, less than 5% of the $727 million the Kenney administration wants to spend on the police department. ....

The Roadmap to Safer Communities has four key goals, which include connected and thriving young people, a strong community engagement, coordinated city services, and safe and healthy neighborhoods.
PHILADLEPHIA - The City of Philadelphia released its 2021 update to the Philadelphia Roadmap to Safer Communities,  which is a multi-year violence reduction strategy designed to create a safer, healthier and more just city.

Gun violence continues to surge in Philly in 2021

The new year is off to a violent start in Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Police Department recorded 50 homicides in January, a 32% increase over last year, the deadliest in three decades. The tally, which includes the accidental shooting of a 9-year-old girl for which her father and 12-year-old brother have been charged, is the highest the city has reported at this point in the year since 2007.
Non-fatal shootings have also continued to surge. More than 140 people were shot this month, a 71% jump over this time last year.
The majority of people shot are Black men. The list of victims also includes nearly a dozen children under the age of 18. ....
