Collegiate researchers including biology students at Lycoming College and Susquehanna University continue to monitor the health of trout and cold water fisheries in tributaries of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
“We really rely on Susquehanna University and Lycoming College staff and students to provide data on the health of streams and value the inventory colleges provide,” said Walt Nicholson, vice president of Susquehanna Trout Unlimited chapter and a retired executive in the water and sanitary field.
Ahead of the April 17 statewide opening day of trout fishing season, the organization held its annual watershed summit in a virtual format. ....

Many organizations each year do projects to ensure wild trout are in abundance in streams, lakes and rivers.
Before the opening day of trout season on April 17, members of the Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited met for their annual watershed summit.
Reducing acid mind drainage by removing two old coal refuse culm piles that were causing water impairment near Mildred and Loyalsock Creek was a project discussed.
Acid mine drainage destroys the aquatic life, turning streams orange with toxic chemicals from mining, said Marc Lewis, spokesman for the Loyalsock Creek Watershed Association.
The Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation is helping to monitor the upper reaches of the creek. Water quality and the effluent from two abandoned mine discharge treatment systems are being looked at as is gas withdraw impacts, Lewis said. ....

High waters flooding parts of Lycoming County


Montoursville, Pa. It certainly is 2020 - Mother Nature decided to throw another curveball with several inches of rain last night that led to flooding in areas of north central Pennsylvania. The combination of warmer temperatures yesterday and melting of almost two feet of snow have led to flooding in certain parts of Lycoming County. 
A flood warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Saturday for the West Branch Susquehanna River at Muncy. Flood stage is 20 feet, according to the National Weather Service. The river is expected to remain steady above flood stage at 21.5 feet. 
Flood water in Indian Park reached the baseball and softball fields Friday afternoon in Montoursville. Brett Crossley ....
