Torchlight Parade in Fort Walton caps off Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival

The Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival wrapped up Monday night with the annual Torchlight Parade up Eglin Parkway. Thousands lined the streets for beads, candy and trinkets as they cheered on the Krewe of Bowlegs pirates and other parade participants among the estimated 60 floats and vehicles.
Judges named winners in four categories: Truck Rye-Land Lawn Care; Car Fort Walton Beach Women’s Club; Float Mardi Gras Club of Fort Walton Beach; and Krewe Krewe of Bowlegs.
The event was organized by the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Step One Automotive Group. ....

Captain Billy Bowlegs and pirates storm Fort Walton Beach

FORT WALTON BEACH As the sound of cannon fire cracked under a clear blue sky, Capt. Billy Bowlegs and his pirate krewe stormed Fort Walton Landing on Saturday afternoon, a year after their annual invasion was thwarted by COVID-19.
Hundreds of people, some of them dressed as pirates themselves, lined up to greet the invaders as they came ashore. Leading the charge was Buddy Carter, Capt. Billy LXV, and his queen, Elizabeth Beck England.
Carter was also assisted in his effort to take over the city by the past seven Capt. Billys, who squared off against Fort Walton Beach Mayor Dick Rynearson, and City Council members Nic Allegretto, Kirby Locklear, MG Moran, David Schmidt. ....

FWC encourages safe boating during Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is reminding all boaters to practice safe boating during the Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival on May 1 in Fort Walton Beach.
The FWC and law enforcement partners, including the United States Coast Guard, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Okaloosa Island Fire Department, Fort Walton Beach Police Department, Fort Walton Beach Fire Department and several others, will be patrolling the waterways for public safety during the event.
Law enforcement agencies are encouraging all boaters to enjoy their time on the water but to take a few safety precautions to stay safe. This includes designating a sober boat operator, wearing a life jacket, using an engine cut-off switch lanyard, and paying attention and keeping a proper lookout. ....

Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival returns to Fort Walton Beach with new date

The festival kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, April 30, with a pub crawl. Pick up a card at any one of the following downtown establishments: Fokker’s Pub, Coaster’s, Downtown Music Hall, Salty Duck, Props Brewery or The Block. Get your card punched at all of them and end up at The Block by 10 p.m. for a chance to win prizes, including a 70-inch television.
Saturday is the festival’s big day, and there are two new youth events for pirates in training. Get your costumes ready, because downtown merchants will host a “Trick Argh Treat,” from 2 to 6 p.m. ....

U-Haul accused of bullying Fort Walton Beach area businesses in dispute

CINCO BAYOU For months and probably years before Kmart finally closed its doors, the dwindling number of vehicles occupying its vast parking lot telegraphed the struggles of a dying franchise.
The local store s 38-year run in Cinco Bayou finally came to an end in March 2019 following its sale that January to U-Haul International Inc.
Kmart s departure seems to have ended an era of, if not good will, at least neighborly disinterest, that allowed businesses on either side of the building that housed the store to thrive.
When U-Haul Self Storage took residency, the parking lot at 200 Irwin Ave. slowly began to fill again, not so much with customers vehicles as with trucks and trailers for rent. ....
