Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The acting superintendent of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District released a statement responding to the warning letter from the Region V Executive Committee of the Alaska Schools Activities Association concerning Ketchikan High School not following the COVID-19 mitigation plans for wrestling events last month.
Acting Superintendent Katie Parrott by email said the district was in “receipt of the warning issued to Ketchikan High School by Region V regarding policy violations at a Ketchikan-hosted regional wrestling event. The District is in the process of gathering information regarding the circumstances of the allegations outlined in the warning letter, and has 30 days to review and respond in writing to Region V’s warning. Ketchikan emergency officials now say at least five people were infected with COVID-19 and contagious during last month’s indoor wrestling tournament at Ketchikan High School. The event has since been linked to at least a dozen new cases across the region, officials say.
The regional governing body for school sports says Ketchikan High School did not test its wrestlers prior to the Bill Weiss Tournament on April 23 and 24.
That’s despite rules requiring them to do so. Region Five of the Alaska School Activities Association issued a formal warning to the high school last week. The organization also said Ketchikan High School had not enforced a mask requirement at the tournament. ....

Ketchikan High School Warned by Region, State Governing Body

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Region V Executive Committee of the Alaska School Activities Association has warned Ketchikan High School of possible sanctions due to not following Region V policies concerning  COVID-19 mitigations at the recent Kayhi wrestling tournament.
A formal letter sent by Region V Executive Committee president Jaime Cabral to Ketchikan High School and to ASAA Executive Director Billy Strickland noted that:
“Due to Ketchikan High School’s actions, Region 5 schools and communities have been subjected to unnecessary health and safety risks related to COVID-19. This letter is to be considered a “warning” from the Region 5 Executive Committee. The undue stress on all communities and participating schools could have and should have been avoided. Ketchikan High School’s failure to follow the plans as set forth by the Region 5 Board of Directors created a situation that put both the Region and participating schools in an unsafe a ....

Mat-Su now has the highest COVID-19 daily case average in the state and one of the lowest vaccine rates

Print article
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough, where schools have struggled with scattered closures due to coronavirus outbreaks, now has more daily average COVID-19 cases than any other part of the state.
Even as Mat-Su took that position, several major high school sports events moved there from Anchorage due to less strict coronavirus protocols.
Mat-Su moved into the top spot for daily average case rates Tuesday after the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region held that unwelcome position for four months as the virus ripped like wildfire through the hub of Bethel and outlying villages, some without running water.
On Thursday, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reported about 35 cases per 100,000 in Mat-Su over the past 14 days and about 23 cases per 100,000 for the Yukon-Kuskokwim region. ....
