Coronavirus: Bladen schools adjust to rising virus metrics, impact on ball teams

ELIZABETHTOWN Two high schools paused basketball activities, and a third school closed to in-person instruction because of county and regional coronavirus metrics on Monday.
Bladen County added 14 cases and four recoveries to its tally in the daily update from the Health Department. Emereau: Bladen Charter School opted for 100 percent remote learning before the day began, then announcements came just under six hours apart that East Bladen’s girls and West Bladen’s boys basketball teams would have no workouts or games the rest of this week.
Each basketball team was impacted by contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19. There seven individuals affected in the East Bladen girls program, and 12 in the West Bladen boys program. ....

Coronavirus: County hospitalizations climb to 11

ELIZABETHTOWN Bladen County’s cases outpaced recoveries in additions to the daily update on the coronavirus Wednesday.
There were 31 cases added, to 1,814 since the pandemic began; and 23 recoveries added, to 1,599. The county counts 191 cases as active, with 11 people hospitalized. That’s the most for a single day.
Twenty-four have died.
The state report removed the cluster, in its daily aggregate listing, for Bladen County that was linked to Emereau: Bladen Charter School. The school has been out since Nov. 24, when the first semester ended, and returns next week.
The state also, in its report, said there were technical issues in reporting data on Tuesday. Thus, reports for Tuesday, Wednesday and coming Thursday each are not actual 24-hour windows. ....

Coronavirus: December already worst month for Bladen County, with two weeks to go

ELIZABETHTOWN December is now on record as the worst month for coronavirus cases in Bladen County.
Cases outpaced recoveries Friday in Bladen County statistics logged by its Health Department. There were 19 cases added and 18 recoveries, climbing to 191 active with four people still hospitalized. Since the pandemic began, there have been 1,630 cases and 1,416 recoveries. Twenty-three have died.
At 287 cases, December now stands significantly clear of June’s 271 with another two weeks to go. The four fatalities are second to the five recorded in August.
There was change in the twice-a-week outbreaks and clusters report from the Department of Health and Human Services. In outbreaks, defined as two or more at congregate living settings, Elizabethtown Health and Rehab now counts five cases among staff and none among residents. ....

School districts, charters receive rapid COVID-19 tests as part of pilot program

Seventeen school districts and 11 charter schools have been selected by North Carolina health officials to receive rapid COVID-19 tests as part of a state pilot program.
The K-12 schools will use the tests when in-person instruction is occurring. All schools selected offer either full in-person instruction or a hybrid of remote learning and in-person instruction.
The NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) believe the rapid tests will slow the spread of the virus by quickly identifying infected students and staff.
“This program gives us another tool in our toolkit to slow the spread of COVID-19 across our state and to keep children in the classroom, which we know is vital not only to their academic growth but also to their health and emotional development,” said NCDHHS Secretary Mandy K. Cohen. “We will learn from these pilot schools and plan to expand the program early next year.” ....
