Club members will take turns driving a yellow Massey Ferguson 20D (a 1980s model imported from the UK) which has been named Big Bird by local school children. The Tractor Trek, the brainchild of the club, is raising money for the Southland Charity Hospital and will leave E Hayes in Dee Street at 11am on Sunday 2 May 2021. After travelling along SH1 at an average speed of 30km an hour the tired drivers are expected to arrive 24 hours later at the Canterbury Charity Hospital in Harewood Road, Christchurch, at 11am on Monday 3 May 2021. The 39-year-old, with the support of his family, dedicated his last months on Earth to fighting for better cancer care across New Zealand. His doctor and top oncologist Chris Jackson said this new health system would help save lives like Vining - who was told he was dying of bowel cancer and would have to wait eight weeks for an urgent appointment. ....

Vining knew first hand what it felt like when the person she loved was unable to access treatment, describing it as a state of trauma, panic and constant concern. Her husband, Blair Vining, 39, had campaigned relentlessly for better care for Kiwis suffering from cancer while he experienced bowel cancer himself. His petition to create a national cancer agency was signed by more than 140,000 New Zealanders. After his death in October 2019, Melissa Vining continued the call by raising funds to build the Southland Charity Hospital in Invercargill. She is a trustee on the hospital’s board. Vining said while she welcomed the announcement, it was concerning that Little had committed to setting up more bureaucratic positions while making no commitments for additional resources. ....
