Queen City Seed Library Provides Accessibility to Gardening

ABC 10/CW5
Books aren’t the only thing for rent at your local library.
The Peter White Public Library in Marquette has its very own seed library, where patrons can check out various plant seeds for free and return seeds harvested from their successful plants.
Queen City Seed Library co-founder and volunteer Mike Riesterer explains the impact of the seed collection, saying, “It’s not about making money or anything like that. It’s about having control of your food source. That starts with you being able to grow your own food.”
If you need gardening advice, or simply want to try out a free and sustainable way to garden, visit the Queen City Seed Library near the circulation desk at Peter White Public Library. ....

ISHPEMING Ishpeming Middle School students have started the ball rolling on what could be a city-wide recycling program in Ishpeming. Teacher Paul Steinke and librarian Mary Milton, from C.L. Phelps Intermediate School, presented to the Ishpeming City Council Wednesday a report on the recycling program implemented last December at the middle school. “Since we started the project, many students and parents are wanting to know how to recycle at home,” said Steinke. Milton added, “Each classroom generates about 500 pounds of paper waste per year. We have a district with 66 classrooms which amounts to 33,000 pounds of waste per year that we’re adding to the landfill.” That amounts to $375 in tipping fees, she said. The council voted to provide the school with $500 funding for 100 more recycling bins and prov ....

NEGAUNEE Gary Peterson’s an electrician, but that didn’t stop him from joining the fifty O.K. Auto, Inc. employees who have been protesting the lack of a labor contract since October. Karen DeRoche and Julie Dunstan, whose husbands are miners and were on strike against Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. for four months last fall, also showed for an early morning rally in Negaunee and the mass picketing that followed. In all, about 65 labor unionists gathered at E.H. Ronn Union Hall in Negaunee, then picked up picket signs to carry to the rally. The Saturday pickets and the rally urged shoppers to boycott the O.K. Auto stores in Ishpeming and Marquette. “In the case of O.K. Auto, we need to take the strength we have in the union, and help to get good contracts,” said Dave Foster, District 33 representati ....

IRON MOUNTAIN Some Dickinson County prisoners will be put to work as part of their sentence in a program organized by Sheriff Donald Charlevoix. The Community Work Program began recently when a team of inmates under the direction of on-site supervisor Deputy Dan Maki began clean-up work in Dickinson County parks, Charlevoix said. Teams will continue to work through November, cleaning parks, picking up litter from the sides of roads and doing other projects for which manpower is at a premium due to state funding cuts. Charlevoix said the work program serves several needs. “It eliminates taking up valuable jail space for short-timers who are sentenced. It leaves the jail space for people who really need to be incarcerated,” Charlevoix said. “We’re generally at, or near, our capacity. It’s also a hell of a deterr ....
