More than 1,200 homes and businesses in four Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, counties will have access to broadband through a $7.2 million Atlantic Broadband project that will be partly funded by a state broadband grant from the Virginia Telecommunication Initiative (VATI).
The counties Caroline, Mathews, Lancaster and Middlesex – will be linked by a 130-mile network. The project, which is expected to take 18 months to complete, will get a grant of $4.2 million from VATI and $3 million evenly split by Atlantic Broadband and the four counties. ....

The 11 members of the Opioid Abatement Authority’s board would be required to be drawn from medical professionals, law enforcement, the addiction and recovery community, and legislative staff. The fund the authority oversees would allocate 15% of the funds to localities, 15% to state agencies, and 35% to regional efforts. The remaining 35% would be unrestricted.
 
The bill, introduced by Majority Leader Charniele Herring, was drafted with the help of the Attorney General’s office.
 
Virginia has already won $13 million from the controversial consultants McKinsey. Other lawsuits remain pending, but could be substantial. In other states settlements have been in the billions of dollars. ....

New partnership in Danville offers local residents help obtaining health insurance


DANVILLE, Va. — The COVID-19 pandemic has left hundreds of thousands of Virginians without jobs and health insurance coverage. Project Connect, a special new partnership among the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF), the Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission (TRRC) and the Danville Regional Foundation (DRF) has just been launched to help many local residents obtain needed health insurance from the state.
The Commission and DRF have provided funding to VHCF for an Outreach Worker who will provide 1:1 application assistance to families and individuals interested in obtaining state coverage.
Effective immediately, Francina Jones at Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services is available to provide information about Virginia’s Medicaid program and to help people apply. She can be reached at 434-770-1641. ....
