Police in Busia District are investigating a suspected case of self-immolation after a woman burnt herself to death at a local Church in Masaba Village, Masaba sub-county on Friday night.
The woman identified as Ms Grace Kyokusaba died in a hut fire at Christ Disciple Church, according to Mr Patrick Makhoha, the Mudondo Village LC1 chairperson. ....

Busia NUP supporters flee for fear of arrest

Mr Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP spokesperson, says the State has continued to persecute people simply because they are NUP supporters. He says that police and military should instead be going after corrupt people, robbers, land grabbers and other criminals; that way, they will be putting their time to good use.

Several supporters of the National Unity platform (NUP), among them party leaders in Busia District, are said to have fled the country to Kenya fearing arrest and harassment.
 Over the past few weeks, the media has been awash with news of arrests, detention and torture of NUP members in various parts of the country allegedly by security operatives travelling in ‘drones’ - unmarked vehicles in which people are being driven to unknown destinations. ....

URA impounds wine, spirits with forged digital stamps

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) officials in Busia District have impounded a consignment of wine and spirits worth millions of shillings bearing forged digital tax stamps.
The impounded goods were found at an Asian-owned wine and spirits store in Sofia, Busia Town, following an operation. 
Mr Arnold Turyakira, the acting URA manager eastern region, said the intelligence-led operation was part of a wider crackdown against illicit trade in the country. ....

On Monday, the Bagwere community from the four districts of Pallisa, Butebo, Budaka and Kibuku, woke up to the news of the passing  of their cultural leader (Ikumbania), his highness John Chrisostom Weyabire. Mudangha Kolyangha explores the life and times of the deceased leader.  
Fallen Ikumbania Bishop John C Weyabire was born in 1957 in an aristocratic family in Kenkebu Sub-county, Budaka District to Lawrence Mwoyo, son of Daniel Kawu of the Abakatikok Abanamwera Katikati clan. His mother was Christine Naguti Mwoya. They were both peasants.  ....
