A north-east council has handed out £56m in business support grants since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Aberdeenshire Council has been giving out financial aid to companies in the region on behalf of the Scottish Government, as well as its economic development and protective services team providing crucial financial support.
So far a total of 3,859 small businesses, retail, hospital and leisure firms and tenant occupiers have received the majority of the funding –  coming in at just over £43 million. ....

Coronavirus support: Borders businesses 'given £40m so far'


BORDERS businesses have received more than £40 million of coronavirus funding from the Scottish Government, according to the council.
The grants, administered by Scottish Borders Council, include the Strategic Framework Business Fund, Business Support Fund, and the Newly Self Employed Hardship Fund.
Councillor Mark Rowley, executive member for economic regeneration and finance, said: “We are continuing to deliver further support, whenever it is made available by the Scottish Government, to help businesses and the self-employed across a wide range of sectors who require further assistance or have not yet been eligible for support until now.
Of the £40m funding given so far, SBC has delivered £33.6m through the Business Support Fund; £6.2m through the Strategic Framework Business Fund; £288k through the Newly Self-Employed Hardship Fund; £165k through the Contingency Fund; and £33k through the Bed and Breakfast Hardship Fund. ....

More than 31,000 people in the north-east have accessed government income support since the Covid-19 pandemic began, new figures show.
According to the latest statistics published by the UK Government, around 24,100 jobs in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire were being protected by the furlough scheme at the end of December.
In Aberdeen, there were 12,500 people on furlough, while in Aberdeenshire the figure was 11,600.
By the end of last month, around 7,400 claims had also been made to the self-employed income support initiative in the region.
The total amount of self-employment support paid out in the north-east is more than £22 million. ....
