Acland facing 'nightmare scenario' as court action continues

The parent company of the New Acland Coal Mine says tentative dates for a hearing in November are a nightmare scenario for the mine s workforce.
The Land Court has indicated the re-hearing of New Acland Coal Mine s Stage 3 expansion will likely take place in November.
Queensland Land Court president Fleur Kingham outlined a series of draft directions at the end of today s hearing, after the High Court earlier this month referred the matter back to the Land Court for reconsideration.
In a statement, New Hope Group said it was clear the Oakey Coal Action Alliance, which is opposing the expansion of the New Acland Coal Mine, was doing all it can to bring ongoing objections and delay the process which, for them, is tantamount to a win . ....

Landry, Watt trade blows on south-east mine project

Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry has called on Queensland Senator Murray Watt to advocate the expansion of the New Acland mine, 180km west of Brisbane, to the State Government.
The High Court of Australia last Wednesday ordered new hearings into the planned expansion of New Acland, after spending four months considering an appeal from Oakey Coal Action Alliance against the expansion of the coal mine.
”Now is the time for Senator Watt to stop talking and to start doing something,” Ms Landry said.
“Don’t leave it until the weekend, don’t leave it until next week – do it right now.” ....

"Apprehended bias:" Community group wins High Court appeal against Queensland coal mine

A Queensland community group has been successful in a High Court appeal over the proposed expansion of the New Acland Coal Mine, which is set to be reheard after the court ruled that earlier judgements favouring the coal company had been impacted by “apprehended bias”.
New Hope Coal has long been pushing to expand the company’s New Acland coal mine in Queensland, which would almost double the amount of thermal coal produced by the mine, that is predominantly used for electricity generation.
The expansion faced legal challenges launched by local community group Oakey Coal Action Alliance, representing more than 60 local residents and landholders, which opposes the mine on the basis that it would destroy otherwise productive agricultural land. The group had been represented by the Environmental Defenders Office in the legal action. ....
