Brien Center To Share in $4.9 Million Grant The Baker-Polito Administration today announced $4.9 million in grants awarded to six agencies, including hospitals and treatment and behavioral health centers, for the creation of evidence-based and data-driven co-occurring substance use disorder/mental health response teams embedded in high schools in ten communities to offer intervention and treatment services, and provide alternatives to school suspension for substance use. The Brien Center, here in the Berkshires, is among the recipients. According to a press release from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the six agencies were selected for grant funding based on their ability to provide access to these crucial services, both in school and in the community, as well as virtually due to instances of remote and hybrid learning. ....
New Bedford Issues Snow Parking Ban Information UPDATED (4:45 p.m.) : The City of New Bedford has lifted the parking ban as of 5 p.m. on Monday, February 1. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for New Bedford beginning Monday, February 1 with snow and wind in the forecast. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Southeastern Massachusetts and it is in effect from 7 a.m. on Monday, February 1 through 1 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2. From the Office of New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell: • An emergency parking ban is effective at 8:00 a.m. today and will extend for 48 hours unless lifted or extended. ....

New Bedford High School awarded $250,000 grant for marine technology program The Standard-Times New Bedford High School has been awarded a $250,000 grant through the Massachusetts Skills Capital Grant Program, the Baker-Polito Administration announced recently. The grant funding will be used to construct a state-of-the-art Marine Technology Laboratory to support New Bedford High School’s Career Vocational Technical Education programming in maritime industry skill training. The new facilities will prepare students for careers in marine and maritime industries, according to a school department press release. The NBHS Marine Technology Laboratory will be outfitted with welding training equipment, virtual welding and diesel engine training equipment. To date, New Bedford High School has been awarded $650,000 in Skills Capital Grants since 2019. Previous awards include $125,000 for the school’s finance lab and $275,000 for robotics logistics equipment. ....
