Mass. reports 572 new coronavirus cases among public school students, 48 among school staff members

Local school officials in Massachusetts reported to the state 572 new coronavirus cases among students and 48 among school staff members for the week that ended Wednesday.
The number of cases reported among staff members was at its lowest single-week level since late September.
The state K-12 education agency estimates that about 690,000 students across the state are attending some form of in-person learning, and about 135,000 staff members are working in buildings, the same as the previous week.
Cases are only reported among students who are attending in-person school; cases among students in a fully remote learning model are not being tracked by the state. Cases among staff members are only being reported if the employee was inside a school building within the seven days prior to the reported case. ....

Cabral Budget Proposal Seeks Financials on Sheriff-ICE Agreements


BOSTON Representative Antonio Cabral secured some significant funding for New Bedford as the House unanimously passed its proposed $47.72 billion FY2022 budget on Thursday, and also saw the House unanimously pass his proposal to require the state’s sheriffs to report the finances of their agreements with ICE.
The language passed by the House requires the state’s county sheriffs and the Department of Corrections to report the costs, reimbursements, and expenses associated with their agreements with US Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) every quarter beginning in October 2021.
“I have been fighting this fight because I believe deputizing prison officials to act as federal immigration agents is bad public policy,” Rep. Cabral (D-New Bedford) said in a press release. “It is ineffective, breaks down the relationship between the immigrant community and genuine law enforcement, and is costly to Massachusetts taxpayers who must cover the expense.
