New Vaccination Effort in New Bedford Brings Shots to the People
From fairytales to Hollywood blockbusters, "the rule of three" suggests good things come in threes. Now, some New Bedford-based organizations are coming together to hope that the rule of three will help boost the city's COVID-19 vaccination rate.
Pam Cole, a member of the Commission for Citizens with Disabilities, announced on WBSM a new program developed to vaccinate New Bedford residents in the comfort of their homes, in hopes of raising the stagnant local vaccination numbers.
"We're 10 percent below the state average, but if we wanted to get to 70 percent, it would take 30,000 people, and that's a lot of people," Cole said.

NBSO Awarded Wicked Cool Places Grant


NBSO Musicians giving free public performance, Summer 2019
The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra (NBSO) is pleased to announce the approval of a $7,400 Wicked Cool Places grant, financed by the city of New Bedford’s Arts, Culture and Tourism Fund.  News of the grant came from the New Bedford Economic Development Council regarding the implementation of the NBSO’s proposed project, “Music in the Streets”.  Music in the Streets will enable the NBSO to collaborate with a number of organizations in the area, bringing music to streets and outdoor locales across the city.  A goal of the project is to bring cultural vitality to areas in New Bedford by performing musical concerts with partners.  Partners may include Love the Ave, New Bedford Housing Authority, New Bedford Parks, Third Eye Unlimited, Cape Verdean Association and other groups. The concerts will be free and open to all, and may vary from solo musicians to quintets.

Former New Bedford Mayor Frederick M. Kalisz, Jr., who served from 1998 to 2006, died Wednesday morning from complications brought on by COVID-19, according to his family and city officials. The former mayor was 63.
Kalisz’s brother, Michael Kalisz, confirmed his sibling’s passing via Facebook.
“Family and friends — it’s with a saddened heart that I share the news that my brother, Frederick M. Kalisz, Jr. passed away this morning due to complications from Covid,” Michael Kalisz wrote. “Please keep Fred’s wife Pat, his son Ricky and our entire family in your thoughts and prayers. We will provide an update with arrangements. Thank you, stay safe and stay healthy.”

Former New Bedford mayor Frederick M. Kalisz Jr. dies from COVID


Before his term, he was city councilor for Ward 2 and worked for Buzzards Bay National Estuary Program in toxics reduction. After leaving office, he led the Parents Alliance for Catholic Education, earned degrees in law and public policy, guest lectured at local universities, volunteered at the city's Polish church and took on the role of register of deeds for Bristol County's southern district in 2017. 
His brother, Michael Kalisz, shared the news in a Facebook post that brought hundreds of comments in just a few hours, many of which recalled personal memories with the former mayor. 
"Fred was just such a remarkable man, a remarkable brother, a caring son, a loving husband and father," said Michael Kalisz, 57. "He was always there whatever the need and tried to do whatever he could for whoever it was... It feels so unfair he was taken away before we could enjoy more time together."

Former New Bedford Mayor Fred Kalisz Passes Away
NEW BEDFORD — Former New Bedford Mayor and current Southern Bristol County Register of Deeds Dr. Frederick M. Kalisz, Jr. has passed away due to complications with COVID-19.
Kalisz’s brother Michael Kalisz posted the news on Facebook just before 8 a.m. that the former mayor had died this morning. He was 63 years old.
Fred Kalisz was sworn into office on January 5, 1998, and served eight years as mayor before he was defeated by Scott W. Lang. Prior to his time as mayor, Kalisz served eight years on the New Bedford City Council, including serving as council president. He had also served almost four and a half years as program manager for the Buzzards Bay Project.

For the past couple of years or so, I've passed the site of the old Deja Vu lounge that was once operational on Pope's Island in New Bedford but is now nothing more than an empty space.
However, recently it appears to have some new life and construction stirring about the property. The question is though, what could possibly be going up in that location?
On Facebook, the rumor mill is pointing towards a strip mall (no pun intended) that would host multiple retail stores, but it's still too early to know at this point. I reached out to my good friends over at Couto Construction who are behind the construction project and they weren't clear as to what it may or may not be.
