I met my Freshman year roommate on Facebook. He seemed nice enough and worried about the possibility of roommate disaster. I was happy to commit to 9 months in the same shoe box with him. The night before move-in day, my family drove  up to Ithaca and we spent the night in a small hotel about 10 minutes outside of the city. I walked into the lobby, bubbling with excitement, nervous for my first day of school. My new roommate, off the plane from Taiwan, was the first face I saw.
By random chance, our families chose the same hotel to stay in that night despite all the other possibilities. That night, the fire alarm went off, and dozens of Cornell families streamed out of their rooms into the parking lot. This was my first glimpse of the community I was soon to enter and a chance to bond with my new roommate. This random confluence of events set the tone for my next four years, made magical by the unshakable marriage of fate and good fortune. ....

Cornell poet’s play “Trap Door” opens an aperture into Ithaca history
“Trap Door,” a “headphone walking play” that opens May 20 in downtown Ithaca, invites audiences to notice the streets they travel, said Cornell poet Lyrae Van Clief-Stefanon.
“Meandering these streets, one might happen upon a landmark site or a name easily recognized. But how many stories go untold? Which ones have slipped into gaps in history? What place do such silences hold in shaping a community?” said Van Clief-Stefanon, associate professor of literatures in English and lead writer of the play. “‘Trap Door offers an aperture: one the walking play format encourages us to pass through, allowing us to see our surroundings in a new light.” ....

CTI Workshops foster faculty teaching community

February 8, 2021
To support faculty preparation for spring semester, the Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI) hosted two series of workshops entitled
What Works in the weeks before the start of the term. The workshops brought together faculty from across campus to discuss successful teaching strategies from fall courses, as well as ways to adapt them to the challenges of the spring 2021 teaching context.
CTI developed
What Works for In-Person Teaching with Remote Students and
What Works for Online Teaching out of the knowledge that instructors worked extremely hard to teach in new and difficult circumstances last fall. Each series focused on 4 areas: Group and Collaborative Assignments, Active Learning, Assessment, and Building Community. ....
