University-developed US animal disease ID system receives Tyson support

MANHATTAN, Kan. A national cattle identification system that was first developed at Kansas State University has received a big boost of support from one of the country’s largest food companies.
Tyson Fresh Meats, a subsidiary of Tyson Foods Inc., is backing U.S. CattleTrace, a system that uses ear tags with ultra-high frequency technologies to establish a national animal disease traceability system.
The system was first tested in 2018 as a pilot project led by K-State, the Kansas Livestock Association, the Kansas Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and individual producers.
At the time, university researchers were interested in developing a system to help safeguard Kansas’ $17 billion cattle industry. The idea was to garner support among producers, who would attach ear tags with ultra-high frequency chips. As cattle moved through the production system, researchers could collect data on their locations and movements on compute ....

 TOPEKA – Members of the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) elected Jerry Kuckelman, a cattle feeder from Manhattan, as president during the group’s annual business meeting Dec. 17. The membership chose Oskaloosa rancher Phil Perry as KLA president-elect. Kuckelman and Perry will lead the 5,700-member organization during the next year.
Kuckelman is the president and chief executive officer of Innovative Livestock Services (ILS), which consists of eight feedyards in central Kansas and south central Nebraska and an extensive farming operation. Kansas Livestock Association members elected Jerry Kuckelman, a cattle feeder from Manhattan, as president during the group’s annual business meeting recently. The membership chose Oskaloosa rancher Phil Perry as KLA president-elect. Kuckelman and Perry will lead the 5,700-member organization during the next year.

Kuckelman is the president and chief executive officer of Innovative Livestock Services, which consists of eight feedyards in central Kansas and south central Nebraska and an extensive farming operation. He began his career as a cattle buyer for IBP, then transitioned into feedyard management where he spent 27 years, with most of that time as manager of Fairleigh Feed Yard in Scott City. Kuckelman joined ILS in early 2011 as chief operating officer. ....
