MoU signing strengthens Deakin and Hanwha partnership
Deakin University and Hanwha Defense Australia have strengthened their partnership by signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Founded in 1952, Hanwha Corporation has grown to become South Korea’s largest defence company. It has established a formidable reputation for research and development across aerospace, fintech and clean energy, areas that align with Deakin’s strategic priorities and its research and commercialisation expertise.
The MoU was signed on 6 May at the Waurn Ponds Campus – home to Deakin’s Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI) – by Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin and Hanwha Defense Australia Director of Strategy and Business Development, Mr Tim Pickford. The agreement will drive collaboration between Deakin and Hanwha in modelling and simulation, machine learning applications and human performance. ....

Does your business really need to keep that data?

Deakin
To mark Privacy Awareness Week, Industry Professor Phillip Magness at Deakin’s Centre for Cyber Security Research and Innovation argues businesses should carefully consider how much personal information they keep, given the risks of a data breach.
An area of privacy that often receives less attention than others is data retention. In my experience, individuals and organisations continue to hold personal information when they don’t really need it anymore; perhaps for fear of deleting something that they may need “one day, for something, maybe” or perhaps because they are uncertain about their retention requirements.
Summarily, the Australian Privacy Principles require an entity that is bound by the Privacy Act to take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify personal information when it is no longer needed for any purpose for which it was collected. ....

Can AI be made trustworthy?

ITU
As artificial systems (AI) get increasingly complex, they are being used to make forecasts – or rather generate predictive model results – in more and more areas of our lives.
At the same time, concerns are on the rise about reliability, amid widening margins of error in elaborate AI predictions.
Management science offers a set of tools that can make AI systems more trustworthy. The discipline that brings human decision-makers to the top of their game can also be applied to machines, according to Thomas G Dietterich, Professor Emeritus and Director of Intelligent Systems Research at Oregon State University.

Largest Solar Farm at an Australian University | Off Grid Energy Independence

Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin was joined by Dr Alan Finkel AO, Special Adviser to the Federal Government on Low Emissions Technology, to turn the key on the industrial-scale Microgrid, the largest solar farm ever built on an Australian university campus. Professor Martin delivered an impassioned address, using American President John F Kennedy s Rice University speech in 1962 as an inspiration, likening NASA s Apollo program to the scale of ambition required to achieve global carbon neutrality. For further information see the IDTechEx report on Energy Harvesting Microwatt to Gigawatt: Opportunities 2020-2040.

Australia is in a strong position to benefit from moving rapidly in this endeavour, and at Deakin, we believe we have a duty to use our capabilities and assets to demonstrate both ambition and leadership on the issue of renewables, Professor Martin said. ....

Governor-General opens new Deakin research building

Deakin
A new research building officially opened by the Governor-General, His Excellency David Hurley, will establish Deakin as the first university in Australia equipped to handle zone 4 classified, secret-rated defence research.
Located within the Geelong Future Economy Precinct at the University’s Waurn Ponds Campus, the $18million building will extend the capacity of Deakin’s Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI) to build on its industry-leading research and development in the fields of motion simulation, robotics and haptics, defence systems, and modelling and simulation.
Now equipped with a Zone 4 capable classified secret-rated space, Deakin will become the first university in Australia to provide a highly secure research environment suitable for the Department of Defence and the defence industry. ....
