Review / 'Bold' photographs reflect a year like no other

“VIEW2021” is PhotoAccess’ annual award exhibition showcasing the work of 11 emerging and re-emerging artists from across the region.
The works deeply reflect a year like no other, depicting an inward gaze as the world around became smaller and people were forced to slow down. The exhibition is quietly confident yet bold, a testimony to each artist’s tenacity and determination to continue to make.
Sofia Dimarhos’s work, “Physique” is a series of three sculptural images accompanied by a video work on an opposite wall. Her works are close-ups of the human body on high-shine paper. The video is also a close-up viewing and is equally sensual, mesmerising and repulsive, that I found myself going back for a second viewing. ....

New findings on devonian 'platypus fish' cast light on evolution of modern jawed vertebrates

New findings on the brain and inner ear cavity of a 400-million-year-old platypus-like fish cast light on the evolution of modern jawed vertebrates, according to a study led by Dr. ZHU Youan and Dr. LU Jing from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The study was published in
Current Biology on Jan 27.
Back in 1960s, Paleontologist Dr. Gavin C. Young found several fossils of a long-beaked fish, a type of placoderm, in the Burrinjuck limestones in Australia. He named the fish
Brindabellaspis stensioi, and other people jokingly dubbed it platypus fish because of its long beak. ....

TransGrid deploys drones to perform power line work

Removes risk of climbing towers.
Energy grid operator TransGrid is using drones to install hardware on power lines and hang wires in mountainous terrain.
Most recently, the unmanned aircraft were deployed to attach bird diverters, objects that are designed to increase the visibility of overhead power lines for birds, to lines in Stockdill, ACT.
The drones allow the hardware to be installed much more quickly and removes the risks associated with working at heights.
TransGrid worked with Preformed Line Products (PLP) to design the cradle that allows its bird diverters to be installed by the drones. ....
