What was supposed to be an ideal town to take some of the population burden off Dhaka city has so far been revised five times since its initiation in 1995, with its progress still a far cry from completion. It has now been 11 years since the initial deadline of Rajuk s Purbachal New Town project, and the initial population estimate (10 lakh) has nearly tripled while the initial project cost (Tk 3,312 crore) has more than tripled. Let us not forget that all of these delays and revisions are being financed by public money. ....

The government has taken a plan to construct up to 60,000 new flats in Purbachal New Town and 8,400 in Uttara Sector 18.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said this in his budget speech today.
Following the directives of the Hon ble Prime Minister, the government is formulating and implementing projects to increase the housing facilities of government officials and employees from 8 percent to 40 percent.
Under this project, 2,762 residential flats have been constructed in FY 2020-2021. Another 1,536 flats will be constructed across the country including in Dhaka, he said. ....

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today urged countrymen not to put their near and dear ones lives at risk, as they rush to village homes to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.
I know people are rushing to their villages ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. You may be exposed to coronavirus on the ferry or in the vehicle on your way as you don t know who is infected and you could infect your father, mother, grandparents, brother, sister and others. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said the government will build planned cities in all districts of the country, not only in Dhaka.
We’ll make planned housing in every division and district…it’ll no longer be Dhaka-centric one so that people have a better life [everywhere], Sheikh Hasina said.
The Prime Minister said this while addressing a function marking the handover of plot documents to 1,440 original residents and affected people of Purbachal New Town Project.
She joined the programme, held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC), virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban. ....
