A regional health education and service platform for cancer prevention and control has been unveiled at Shanghai International Medical Center.
It will establish a family doctor service model for cancer management, health officials announced on Wednesday, during National Cancer Prevention and Control Promotion Week.
“Family plays a key role in cancer prevention, control and treatment,” said the center’s Dr Ding Gang.

LAHORE: “The First Cell”, latest book by Dr Azra Raza, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University, was launched by the Afkar-e-Taza ThinkFest Online. Dr Azra Raza was in conversation with the CEO of Shaukat Khanum Hospitals, Dr Aasim Yusuf.
Explaining the crux of her argument Dr Raza, who has been a practicing oncologist and cancer researcher for over four decades, noted that “We are obsessed with curing cancer but forget the patient.” This lack of empathy she said was criminal.
Speaking from her personal experience where her husband suffered and died from cancer, Dr Raza said “Unless we convey the extent of human anguish, we would not be doing justice to the patient or to the field.” Countering the long-held belief, Dr Raza emphasised “We are trained not to get involved, but the patients demand empathy.” ....

Relay for Life hosts hybrid event to benefit American Cancer Society

Every year, Relay for Life of JMU hosts an annual relay event to benefit the American Cancer Society. According to the Relay for Life website, the money raised at these Relay for Life events goes toward funding cancer research, offering services to cancer patients and advancing health equity to ensure all patients have access to treatment.
This year the event was hosted in a hybrid format April 9. Whitney Minnick, a senior development manager with the American Cancer Society, said the event looked very different from years past.
“Prior to the pandemic, the Relay for Life of JMU event was a fully in-person event that took place on Hillside field,” Minnick said. “In 2019, we had over 1,400 participants in attendance. Last year, the event was fully virtual and took place on Facebook Live — this year was a mix between the two formats.” ....

College friendship enriched our lives for 49 years

I’m at the stage of my life where I seem to be losing pieces, not gathering new pieces the way I did as a young adult. Somewhere in middle age, I crested a continental divide that started a long slide down a hill of losing parents, in-laws and friends.
I lost my college roommate, Sara Coldren Trego, to cancer in March. That despicable disease stole away a friendship of nearly 49 years.
Sara and I met in the first days of our freshman year at Manchester College (now University) because we were band geeks.
She had played clarinet in high school, switching to bass clarinet at Manchester because the band needed one. I had played alto saxophone in high school, switching to baritone saxophone at Manchester for the same reason. We sat next to each other at the end of the row of our respective sections, the dividing line between clarinets and saxophones. ....
