Memorial principal reappointed to state Early Childhood Advisory Council


A local educator has been reappointed to the state’s Early Childhood Advisory Council.
Amy Smith, principal of Memorial Education Center, was among 21 appointees announced by Governor Andy Beshear earlier this month. The Somerset woman will represent citizens at-large for a term expiring June 20, 2022.
“I find it to be an honor to serve knowing that the job being done by the knowledgeable individuals on the committee will benefit young children, their families and other stakeholders throughout our commonwealth,” Principal Smith said.
Having served on the ECAC for two years, Smith recently served on the Council’s Mobilizing Communities Subcommittee which concluded last fall. ....

Community leader, Master Gardener Marvin Kinch passes away

A man who stayed involved in just about everything – that was the consensus of those who knew Marvin Kinch.
Kinch, a community leader, military leader and former sports editor for the Commonwealth Journal, passed away Wednesday at the age of 77.
Among the many accomplishments he is remembered for, one that stands out is the creation of the Children’s Garden, found beside the Pulaski County Public Library.
“He took the bull by the horns and turned that empty, vine-covered parking lot into the beautiful garden we have today. He had lots of help, but he spearheaded it,” said former Pulaski County Public Library director Judy Burdine. ....

The Pulaski County Public Library is hosting a Christmas Express Drive-Thru on Friday, December 18th, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.  You and your family can drive thru the library garage for some Reindeer food, cocoa, and more!  The car line to drive thru the Christmas Express begins on East Spring Street in downtown Somerset.
The library asks that you follow directions upon arrival.  For more information about the event, you can call the Pulaski County Library at 606-679-8401.
