2021 Marks Grass Lake's 150TH Anniversary


Grass Lake is the oldest settlement in Jackson County. It s origins go back to the early 1800s, with squatters and settlers arriving until it finally was incorporated as a village in 1871. This year, 2021, marks the 150th anniversary of that incorporation.
GRASS LAKE TIMELINE (Thanks to Grass Lake history):
1800s: David Sterling & family are recognized as the first squatters.
1829-1830: New York settlers named Pease, Keyes, and Walker arrive.
1832: Grass Lake Township set up.
1835: A log schoolhouse is constructed.
1838: The first Congregational Church is erected.
1839: Area Native Americans are moved to reservations in Iowa.
1839: A post office is established in December. ....

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – A Grass Lake Township family’s home was destroyed, and their dog was killed in a fire Saturday.
The fire started before 3:35 p.m., March 13 in the 4900 block of Fishville Road, fire Chief Greg Jones said. It also destroyed the family’s camper and pickup and all their personal belongings, he said.
The family was living in the camper while they were between houses, Jones said. They were not home at the time of the fire, he said.
Embers from a fire pit likely blew, catching the grass under the camper on fire, Jones said. The fire also burned the nearby wooded area, destroying about four acres, he said. ....

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – A Blackman Township home was destroyed by fire Tuesday night.
Firefighters found the two-story farmhouse in the 6800 block of Deweese Road fully engulfed in flames at 10:56 p.m., Feb. 16, Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety Director Mike Jester said.
No one was home when firefighters arrived, and no one was injured in the fire, Jester said, adding the cold temperatures did not hamper the fire fighting efforts. ....

Deputies respond to accidental gun shot victim


On Monday, February 8th at 11:37 am,  Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call of an accidental gun shot victim in the 11000 block of Morrissey Road in Grass Lake Township, Sheriff Gary Schuette announced in a press release.
The victim, a 33 year old man from Summit Township was concealed carrying his pistol when it got caught on a piece of machinery and discharged the round striking his leg.  The victim was then transported to Henry Ford Allegiance Health where he was treated for non life threatening injuries.
Responding officers found the pistol was registered to the victim, and alcohol did not play a factor in this incident.  The investigation has been handed off to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office for official review. ....
