Something new blooming at Botanical Gardens


LARGO — Something is set to bloom this year at the Florida Botanical Gardens, and it isn’t a new species of flower.
Groundbreaking is expected to begin within the next two months on a Children’s Discovery Garden that will allow kids to experience nature and teach them to be good stewards of the environment.
The new garden will be built on 2 acres of land along McKay Creek and will be adjacent to an acre of wetland and native plants, surrounded by pine, oak and palmettos.
“This is really an untapped resource,” said Emily Bloxam, communications coordinator for the Florida Botanical Gardens Foundation. “We are really excited to get this project rolling.” ....

LARGO, Fla. — The Florida Botanical Gardens Foundation is stepping up its education outreach thanks to a community partner that cares just as much about the environment as they do.
They were one of a handful of organizations and schools to receive a combined $30,000 in grant money from Tampa Bay Water.
Teacher and mom Kerry Doughty was one of the first people to discover the newest education tool at the Florida Botanical Gardens. ....

Tampa Bay Water will distribute $58,900 in grant and sponsorship funds to help Tampa Bay area non-profits and schools protect the region’s sources of drinking water. The utility is partnering with the Florida Botanical Gardens Foundation, Glazer Children’s Museum, Keep Pinellas Beautiful, Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, Pasco County Schools and Pinellas County Schools on projects that educate families and students through exhibits, lesson plans and environmental education programs.
We’re partnering with organizations that share our commitment to protect and conserve our water resources. These programs not only help protect our drinking water and environment; they are also a great public service to families throughout Tampa Bay. ....
