Friends of Lake County chairman wins Florida trails promotion award


LEESBURG Friends of Lake County Trails chairman Mike Stephens was named Trails Promoter of the Year by the Florida Bicycle Association, earning statewide recognition for his leadership. 
“I was completely shocked,” Stephens said. “I primarily set the vision and goals for the group and focus on education and advocacy for trails. I focus my efforts more on the entire County, including County Government, County Commissioners and State Legislators as it relates to planning, funding, and approving the Regional Trails in Lake County.”
Friends of Lake County Trails is an initiative of Lake 100, a member organization committed to advancing economic development in Lake County by providing education, guidance and leadership, according to the group s website. ....

Project will address Jacksonville bicycle and pedestrian safety


Extra patrols will hit Jacksonville streets beginning this week to help improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety through a new High Visibility Enforcement project funded by the University of North Florida.
The $57,096 contract from the university, in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation, is specifically designed to pay for Sheriff’s Office overtime traffic deployments.
Enforcement efforts will focus primarily on educating drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists, the Sheriff s Office said. However, violations may result in warnings or citations depending on the circumstances.
It s the right time for renewed education and enforcement in Jacksonville, said Stephen Tocknell, advocacy director for the North Florida Bicycle Club. The city had eight bicycling deaths in 2020, plus one in Clay County and another on Florida A1A just south of Ponte Vedra Beach. SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Bernadette DiPino has resigned as chief of police for the Sarasota Police Department, effective 5 p.m. Friday.
The announcement came after a complaint was filed with the City of Sarasota over comments Chief Bernadette DiPino made about a homeless man.
The City released information on the anonymous complaint, saying that Chief DiPino made the comments at a public event where a known individual with documented mental illnesses began mocking the officers and singers at the event. ....
