What's under our feet? Ground-breaking study of Dublin's soil and biodiversity this summer

As part of our Dublin City Biodiversity Action Plan, Dublin City Council will support the Tellus Survey, which is being carried out by the Geological Survey of Ireland.
For the next 6 weeks sampling teams will visit over 800 sites in Dublin City to collect soil and vegetation samples.
Leslie Moore, Head of Parks Services, stated “
For the first time, we will be able to get a good picture of what the soils of Dublin City are – our natural resources that we depend upon for biodiversity, growing food, storing water, pollutants and carbon and giving life to the City. Dublin City Council welcomes the opportunity to support this landmark study”. ....

New land-classification system can inform policy

May 7, 2021 1:54 pm
A new land map and classification system have been created for the Republic of Ireland, dividing the country into nine distinct areas that share environmental characteristics.
The new classification system is significant as it addresses a knowledge gap that has existed, which will better inform planners and policymakers about future land use monitoring programmes and agri-environment schemes, and help protect and enhance biodiversity and environment quality.
This will, ultimately, benefit farmers and landowners all across the country.
Published recently in the
Journal of Environmental Management, and co-authored by Dr. James Moran, a lecturer in ecology and biology at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), the new land-classification system and map are part of a broader research project entitled ‘High Nature Value Farmland and Forestry Systems for Biodiversity (FarmForBio). ....

EPA's pollution maps pinpoint areas for fertiliser action 05 May 2021 Free

TheEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designed “pollution impact potential maps” for phosphorus and nitrogen.
Across the country, 1,007 waterbodies are affected by excess phosphorus (P), while 535 are impacted by excess nitrogen (N), including 18 drinking water supplies.
Some 2,400km or under 2% of river banks have been identified as needing pathway interception measures for P.
Some 6,900km2 of highest-risk critical source areas were also outlined where nitrate losses from farms are highest in the south and southeast.
Key to preventing loss, according to Jenny Deakin of the EPA, who was speaking at a Teagasc Signpost Series webinar, is using “the right measure in the right place” and these maps will help to target zones vulnerable to loss. ....
