Environmental Research suggests that exposure during pregnancy to a wide variety of pesticides may lead to the development of central nervous system tumors during childhood.
And the increased risk of these tumors – estimated as much as twice to 2.5 times higher for some pesticides – occurs even if the mother is not a farmworker, but lived as much as 2.5 miles (4000 meters) away from the field where the pesticides are sprayed, researchers found.
Exposure to certain pesticides, simply through residential proximity to agricultural applications during pregnancy, may increase the risk of childhood central nervous system tumors. Policy interventions to reduce pesticide exposure in individuals residing near agricultural fields should be considered to protect the health of children. ....

According to the researchers, their findings refute arguments that lower pesticide consumption has a lower environmental impact. Despite arguments that genetically modified crops will eliminate the need for pesticides, the study indicates that pesticides used on GM crops have the same toxic effects as pesticides used on conventional crops.
The study is focused on the application and toxicity of 380 pesticides used in the United States between 1992 and 2016. According to scientists, many regions across the world are expected to follow the same pattern with lower volumes but greater toxic effects. Still, open-access data on pesticide usage is not available in the EU, Latin America, China, or Russia. ....

Allium Leafminer Should Be Active Soon

Allium leafminer is an invasive insect from Europe that found its way to North America in December 2015.
Since that first U.S. sighting in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, ALM has spread to surrounding states and has caused damage and even total crop loss on fields of vegetables in the allium family, including spring onions, garlic and leeks.
We have been studying this insect since 2016 to understand its biology and provide management recommendations.
ALM has two flights per year (spring and fall) and each flight lasts from four to eight weeks. I have observed that ALM does not always appear in damaging numbers in any given field. One season a grower will have a high population, and the next will see only sporadic damage. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict what the population will be at any given location, so allium growers need to scout their crops and apply appropriate control measures as needed. ....

Do you dig out the trusty bottle of insecticide?
Not so fast, says Michelle Wiesbrook, a University of Illinois Extension expert in pesticide safety and horticultural weed science. Pesticides have their place in controlling persistent weed and pest outbreaks, but using them incorrectly can harm pets, kill beneficial insects, and leach chemicals into waterways and drinking supplies.
“We recommend that you use pesticides as a last resort,” Wiesbrook says. “A lot of times there are other controls that will work.” ....
