Pesticide "ghosts" can haunt organic farms for decades

(Natural News)
Most commercial crops grown around the world are treated with pesticides. But some farms are now switching to organic practices to avoid the risks that pesticides pose to human and environmental health.
However, new research shows that past pesticide use can still “haunt” fields that have long been converted into organic farms. Published recently in
Environmental Science and Technology, the study shows that fields that have long been dedicated to organic farming still glowed with pesticide residue upon examination.
Beneficial microbes in the soil also appeared to be negatively affected by pesticides even years after their initial application. In all, the study sheds light on the extent of the environmental damage that pesticides can cause. ....

More than half the world's agricultural land is at risk of pesticide pollution, experts warn

Lead author Fiona Tang, a postgraduate research student at the
University of Sydney, noted that 34 percent of those high-risk lands are in biodiverse regions, 19 percent are in low- and lower-middle-income nations and five percent are in water-scarce areas.
Researchers studied use and spread of 92 active pesticide ingredients in 168 countries
Tang and her colleagues studied the use and spread of 92 active ingredients of pesticides in 168 countries. They considered an area at risk of pesticide pollution if the concentration of an active ingredient exceeded “no observed effect concentrations” (NOEC).
Meanwhile, the researchers considered an area at high risk if the concentration of an active ingredient was over 1,000 times higher than the NOEC. ....

Living near pesticide-treated farms raises risk of childhood brain tumors

Published on Wednesday, March 31, in the
Environmental Research journal, the study also revealed that the pregnant women did not have to be working in agriculture or in close contact with pesticides for health-harming exposures to occur.
Study co-author Christina Lombardi, a public health researcher at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said there are large numbers of pregnant women and children living close to pesticide-treated farmlands. Both mothers and children could experience adverse health effects from their proximity to those farmlands.
The study is not the first to show that pesticide use poses a threat to pregnant women and their children. But it is unique in that it showed the specific pesticides linked to the development of different kinds of CNS tumors. ....

Traditional hay meadows should now be closed

SHARING OPTIONS:
Traditional hay meadows cannot be grazed from 15 April until after they are mown annually, which must be after 1 July.
The prohibited period for grazing traditional hay meadows under the Green Low Carbon Agri-Environmental Scheme (GLAS) came into effect this week.
Grazing is not permitted from Thursday 15 April until after the meadow is mown annually, which must be after 1 July.
The maximum application of chemical nitrogen over the year is 40kg per annum or 32 units per acre.
The maximum level of chemical phosphorus allowable is determined by soil samples governing the nutrient management plan.
Weed wiping and/or spot spraying can take place between 15 March and when the meadow is mown annually to control rushes. However, topping cannot take place between these dates. ....

Buffer zones: know where to keep your distance

SHARING OPTIONS:
A minimum width of 2m must be left uncultivated in tillage fields beside watercourses but this can be cultivated once grass is established immediately.
We are now in the middle of the busy season for fertiliser spreading and spraying and protection of our waterways is essential when tackling these jobs.
Adhering to buffer zones is a key part of these jobs, whether it’s a splash plate, trailing shoe, wagtail or a sprayer with low-drift nozzles.
So what is a buffer zone?
A buffer zone is an area of land beside a watercourse which does not receive any agricultural inputs. It is not cultivated and cannot be planted with a tillage crop. On farms with stocking rates over 170kg organic N/ha, a fence should be in place 1.5m from the watercourse so that stock cannot graze beside the watercourse. ....
