An Edmonton woman was found guilty Friday of manslaughter in the death of her five-year-old daughter, who showed up in hospital with brain injuries experts said were often seen in car crash victims.
The woman, who is in her 30s, was charged and pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, failure to provide the necessaries of life and assault with weapons, including a belt and a spatula.
Court of Queen s Bench Justice Avril Inglis said there was not enough evidence to convict her beyond a reasonable doubt on those charges. ....

An Alberta mother sobbed in court Friday as a judge found her guilty of manslaughter in the death of her five-year-old daughter.
The woman, identified in court as “LL,” was charged with second-degree murder after her daughter “S” died in an Edmonton hospital on Oct. 16, 2015. S suffered a brain injury that one expert likened to those seen in victims of high-speed car crashes.

Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Avril Inglis concluded LL inflicted the fatal injuries but found no evidence she intended to cause S’s death. “It likely happened quickly, it may have been impulsive,” Inglis said.  ....

After a lengthy delay, the Lauren Lafleche second-degree-murder trial has resumed in Edmonton.
The judge-alone proceeding was supposed to continue two weeks ago, but was put on hold after Lafleche tested positive for COVID-19. She is not in custody. 
Lafleche is accused of causing a severe head injury that led to the death of her daughter Shalaina Arcand. 
The 34-year-old mother who has two other children is also accused of assaulting Shalaina with a belt and a spatula and failing to provide her with the necessaries of life.  ....
