Statue of civil rights activist Marian Spencer unveiled at Smale Park

View Comments After being delayed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the statue of local civil rights activist Marian Spencer was finally unveiled at Smale Riverfront Park on Sunday.  The sculpture of Spencer, who is famous in part for leading the fight to desegregate Coney Island s swimming pools and being the first Black woman elected to Cincinnati City Council, is the city s first named statue of a woman.  A large crowd gathered at the park s Women s Garden in scorching heat for the statue s dedication, which began just before 5 p.m. The unveiling was preceded by singing and speeches from public officials, as well as family.

Until now. A new statue to be unveiled Sunday honors Marian Spencer, the first Black woman to be elected to the Cincinnati City Council. Spencer also served as vice mayor and fought for the desegregation of Coney Island and YWCA summer camps and pools nationwide, according to a Cincinnati Parks news release. The life-sized sculpture will be unveiled Sunday night at John G. & Phyllis W. Smale Riverfront Park.
